I’ve had high-end watches, given some away, and still own a few; certainly not those costing 5-figures. My absolute threshold for a watch purchase is just slightly south of $1K, and, that’s rare. Of course, the inevitable “discussion” with my wife about such a purchase usually involves talking about attorneys’ fees, distribution of property, visitation rights for the dog, alimony…that would make it an extremely pricey watch!
The good thing is my taste in timepieces has moved down-market…that’s better for my marriage, too. I want fun watches that I find interesting and attractive; timepieces I don’t need to worry about wearing. The Fossil Twist (a hybrid that is both quartz and mechanical), Victorinox Swiss Army Dive Masters, Haurex, and Bulova automatics are my go-to watches lately. For what you get, their ridiculously low prices will make you giddy.
One brand, however, has lately grabbed me: Swatch. I’m not a shill for Swatch. I just think they’re cool, attractive, and reliable. Here’s why:
- Very lightweight
- Easy to read
- The quartz’s loud “tick-tick” sounds mechanical
- Colorful (for my wife)
- Elegant (again, for my wife)…their metal mesh bracelet is a killer
- The Swatch Sistem51 (not a misspelling or typo) automatic is getting rave reviews in the watch magazines
Valerie’s Swatch watches (the first couple were gifts from me) are why she wears a watch every day. Like most people that love watches, she feels naked if she’s not wearing one. It was Swatch that turned her into a devoted lover of timepieces. And, that got her to start wearing watches she received as gifts over years, gifts that friends and family put a lot of thought into.
So, there it is. Swatch watches are a joy to wear while keeping track of time.
