I did better than I thought I would during my 2nd guitar lesson. Nicky had me review the previous week’s assignments, and, if I were to grade myself, I’d say I earned a sold B+. Nicky would probably agree…but don’t put too much into that as he’s way too nice to tell the truth like, “Sal, the kazoo may be a better fit for you.”
My single note playing is better and more comfortable. Where I need more work is in smoothly transitioning from chord to chord. Any transition to the infamous B7 is a struggle to execute without hesitating to get the correct fingering. Practice will take care of that, I’m assured.
Nicky started me on the metronome during the lesson…120 beats per minute. I thought the man liked me! Well, I kept decent time and was able to handle the “velocity.” He said he’d up the pace next time. “Nicky, you’re too good to me.”
Today we also practiced both the E-shape & A-shape barre chords. I’ve played them before, so, I’m familiar with their importance to so many songs. To the true beginner, they are challenging and cause discouragement. It takes awhile of steady practice before a minor “AHA, I get it now” moment occurs. With long term dedication to practicing them, I’m confident there will be a few major moments of enlightenment taking place.
The last part of the lesson was to learn a new song. The first one Nicky suggested I try was completely unfamiliar to me. He kept telling me, “Just wait a second and then you’ll know it…not yet? Okay, now, after this part I know you’ll get it…still no? Really?” What can I say, I don’t listen to any radio stations other than the one playing classical music I have on at work. Hey, nobody (including my wife) ever accused me of being a wild & crazy guy. Ever patient, and no doubt knowing I have an AARP membership card in my wallet, Nicky played something I recognized from the first chord…Hey Jude! This song will be more challenging than Free Falling’s 3-chord structure. Hey Jude requires playing the following chords with a capo at the 3rd fret: A7, A7sus4, G, G/F#, Em7, D7, and Em.
I’m already picturing myself with a Paul McCartney moptop! Well, any northern55er is entitled to a delusion now and then.
